Why: In The Woods, the dude has an Uncle Sasha who [spoiler alert] was in the KGB. It is now a name for sassy girls, like Natasha "Sasha" Obama, Sasha Fierce, and Sasha Cohen, who is about to take over your TV.
Answer: It comes from the name Alexander! which means "man's defender" or "warrior." Only Russian boys are named Sasha, not girls.

The More You Know: Cody Lambert on "Step by Step" was played by Sasha Mitchell. In Sept. 1995, he was arrested for spousal abuse... BUT it turned out his ex-wife was a dirty drug addict child abuser, and he was defending his 4 kids from her. He was granted full custody, and she was only allowed 5 supervised visits a year. Three cheers for the Code-Man!

  1. Omg I'm glad it wasn't true. I was about to lose a little more faith in humanity. Not the Code-Man!

Sasha is a female and male given name. It originated in countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe as a diminutive of Alexander and Alexandra. It is also found as a surname, although this is very rare. Alternative spellings include: Саша (Russian), Саше (Macedonian), Saša (Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian), Sasza (Polish), Сашко (Ukrainian), Sascha (German), Sasja (Dutch and Swedish), and Sacha (French).
The name is not exclusive to one sex or nationality as the common misconception that it is exclusively male & Russian suggests. It is unisex & it's origin is Slavic/Greek. Not Russian.
