What's the origin of the word cummerbund?

Search
: cummerbund

Why: I don't know. I was just thinking about funny things to wear, like Rollerblades and a scuba mask.

Answer: It comes from the Hindi word kamarband, which comes from Persian kamar, "waist or loins" (hubba) + band, "band" (duh).

The More You Know: The tuxedo was first introduced in 1886 in the resort town of Tuxedo Park, NY, on Tuxedo Lake. The town's name is an Anglicized form of the Delaware Indian word p'tuksit, "wolf" - the totem of that particular Delaware group.

  1. To be precise, the tuxedo was first introduced to America in 1886. It was imported from England where it had been invented many years earlier. (Check out www.blacktieguide.com for details)
