Why are the characters in "The Brothers Bloom" named after people in "Ulysses"?

: the brothers bloom

Why: It's bothering me. I don't really see the connection.
  • Bloom = Leo Bloom
  • Stephen = Stephen Dedalus (aka Daedalus)
  • Penelope = Molly Bloom (Penelope in The Odyssey)
  • and Diamond Dog says: "Stephen, still the grand architect. Your symbols - red for temptation, white for salvation. And our hero must face the Minotaur before he escapes the maze."
Answer : On the commentary track, writer/director (USC Film School grad) Rian Johnson - who also wrote Brick, btw - discusses the film's allusions to James Joyce's Ulysses:
Whereas the Bloom of Joyce's work serves as a modern analog for Odysseus, his wife Molly is representative in some ways of Odysseus's loyal wife Penelope. Similarly, Weisz's character Penelope remains loyal to Brody's Bloom throughout the film's various turns.

As another example, Penelope's sexual excitement on the train is reminiscent of the final chapter of Ulysses, an untitled episode often referred to as "Penelope", which concludes with Molly Bloom's soliloquy.

Also in the film, the Greek figure of Daedalus is alluded to primarily in the speeches by the one-eyed Diamond Dog, the stained glass window in The Curator's residence, and in the persistent tinkering actions of Stephen. Diamond Dog, who is arguably Bloom's greatest antagonist, may also be a loose representation of Cyclops.

The More You Know: Are you familiar with Molly's horny final lines? Dan has the ending on a t-shirt:
I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.
