What is bacchanal?

Search
: bacchanal

Why: In my favorite Harry Belafonte song "Zombie Jamboree" (which is actually by the Kingston Trio, a bunch of white guys, who knew):
Although the season was Carnival
We get together in bacchanal
Answer: The bacchanalia were originally festivals for Bacchus (Dionysus), the god of wine. They cultish celebrations were held in secret and attended only by women. Later, admission to the rites was extended to men, and celebrations took place 5 times a month (!).
Now, however, the term refers to any drunken revelry.
You might have [had] a chapter of BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) at your school telling you to just say no.

The More You Know: I posted about the origin of the word "zombie" over a year ago. Do you remember?

  1. Nice post... I came here searching for the meaning of the word bacchanal in the lyrics of Zombie Jamboree. I've got to tell you though, it definitely wasn't the Kingston Trio who wrote Zombie Jamboree, their version was just earlier than Harry Belafonte's.
