What do people see when they have myopia?

: myopia

Why: In the New Yorker story "Drinking Games" about the sociology of drinking alcohol (which you should read, btw - I'll let you borrow it), Malcolm Gladwell talks about alcohol myopia theory - the idea that alcohol doesn't just disinhibit, which is why the same loud obnoxious guy at a bar doesn't act the same way when drinking with buddies while watching a movie. Instead, it makes the person focus on one thing, and everything else pretty much fades away:
Alcohol makes the thing in the foreground even more salient and the thing in the background disappear.
So maybe that one thing is a football game, or maybe it's that your girlfriend is stupid and boring. Who knows!

Anyway, my vision is impeccable - as are all of my senses, really - so I don't know why myopia looks like.

Answer: Ha here are some images. Looks terrible:

The More You Know: Myopia means nearsightedness in Greek. Here's what's wrong with you if you see that way:

  1. Have you read Blink, by Malcom Gladwell? It's on my list of books to read. I hear it's good.

Also, love this post. I'm totally stealing my mom's New Yorker so I can read the article. Thanks Carlsies!
