What does "funicula" mean?

Search
: funiculi

Why: In Heavenly Creatures, Pauline has some weird dream sequence (directed by Peter Jackson) that features that song "Funiculi, Funicula," which you know. This one:
Answer: It means funicular, i.e. an inclined cable car! It comes from Latin funiculus, a diminutive of funis, "rope". The song was composed in 1880 to commemorate the opening of the first funicular cable car on Mount Vesuvius. (That car was destroyed when Vesuvius erupted in 1944.)
The chorus of the song (Jamme, jamme 'ncoppa, funiculì, funiculà!) means, "Let's go to the top... funiculì, funiculà!"

  1. I got to ride one of those in Italy. They called it a funicalore (foon-i-kah-lor-ay).
