: tessellate

Why: In this "Dear Subway" thing from Left-Handed Toons:
Answer: The word "tessellate" means to form or arrange small squares in a checkered or mosaic pattern. It is derived from the Greek word tesseres, "four." The first tilings were made from square tiles.

A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another word for a tessellation is a tiling. A honeycomb is an example of a natural tessellation.

Here is some Interactivate: Tessellate! game-type thing that I don't really get. Maybe you will like it.

The More You Know: I haven't been inside a Subway since I was like 14. Some smell in there gives me instant migraines. It's NBD - I don't really eat sandwiches anyway.
