What is the medical term for "dry heaving"?

What! Surely not, no. It's much too onomatopoeic.

Retching is the reverse movement (peristalsis) of the stomach and esophagus without vomiting. Sometimes this is called the dry heaves.

But maybe it is an onomatopoeia. It comes from

• Lithuanian imitative kregeti, "to grunt"
• German khrækijanan, "to clear one's throat"
  
• Old English hraca, "phlegm" - and hræcan "to cough up"
