Why: During a weird pan from Nate to Serena, G.G. said:
There are songs that make us want to dance, songs that make us want to sing along - but the best songs are the ones that bring you back to the moment you first heard them and once again break your heart.
That sounds like maybe the song has been on the show before...

Answer
: The song was an acoustic version of "Star Power" from their 1986 album EVOL! (Listen to the original here.) And it's never been on the show before!
Downtown art-rock titans Sonic Youth will appear on an episode of the uptown snark-soap melodrama "Gossip Girl" this coming Monday, October 12. They'll perform an acoustic version of the EVOL oldie "Star Power", and hopefully they won't have to interact with ultra-annoying ex-rocker dad Rufus Humphrey at all.

Now, the band's website reports that they'll release that acoustic version of "Star Power" as a single the very next day. On October 13, we'll be able to download the song from the Sonic Youth website and iTunes. On SY's site, you'll be able to buy it with a limited edition, hand printed and numbered "Star Power" poster, pictured above.

  1. earlier in the ep, when rufus was acting like the big old lesbian he is....he asked lilly if she remembered that one magical night when his old band linken park opened for sonic youth. so i assume gossip girl was referencing that.
