The More You Know: The date palm is one of 13 species of palm in the genus Phoenix. Isn't that adorable? Like it's rising from the ashes. Except not really:
The name derives from φοῖνιξ, the Greek word for "date palm," probably referring to the Phoenicians who brought the palm with them in their travels - or maybe from φοινός, "red-colored," referring to the color of their dates.
