: log cabin penny

Why: I found one on the ground tonight. I didn't even know they existed. Looks like this:

Answer: The first 2009 Lincoln Cent was released Feb. 12, 2009 - the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The log cabin represents his birth and early childhood in Kentucky.

There have been / will be 3 other pennies released this year that feature Lincoln doing various activities. They include:
  • Formative Years in Indiana - reading a book during a break from choppin wood, released May 14
  • Professional Life in Illinois - standing in front of the state capitol building, released Aug. 13
  • Presidency in Washington, DC - half the completed Capitol Dome as it looked during Lincoln's inauguration, released Nov. 12

The More You Know: The penny I found was face down and I picked it up anyway. I hope that doesn't mean I'll have bad luck for the rest of the day.

In ancient African culture, people carried a foot or other part of a swift animal so that the carrier would be able to escape or flee with the speed of the animal. This “lucky rabbit's foot” charm was handed down and assimilated into our culture by the enslaved Africans who were brought to the New World.
