How many different time zones are there?

Search
: how many time zones in the world, time zone abbreviations

Why: Trying to figure out if the meteor shower is "tonight," like right now, or European "tonight," as in tomorrow.

There are way more than 24. There are even more than 25.

Answer: I don't know. A buttload, anyway. This is due to political boundaries and jazz like that.

For example, it is currently 12:17 PM in both Stockholm and Johannesburg. While Stockholm is on Central European Time (CET), Johannesburg is on South African Standard Time (SAST).

I know some aren't even on this list. It labels AST as "Atlantic Standard Time," though AST also stands for Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3).

And just look at poor Australia.

When it is 12:24 AM in the yellow and green zones, it is 12:54 AM in the blue zones. Fine. But then it is 10:24 PM in the red zone, and somehow 11:39 PM in the purple smear. Say whaaat?

The More You Know: Peru has its own time zone (PET). Maybe other countries do, too.
