Search: sorrel
Why: In the In Touch Weekly crossword, #3 down, "Sour herb"
SORRELAnswer: A vegetable / herb found in Europe (green) and the Caribbean (deep red). The young leaves taste fruity, similar to kiwi, and the older leaves are more tangy due to oxalic acid. Sorrel can be harvested for salads and soups, or the leaves can be lightly cooked like spinach or chard (which is very good for you, by the way).
Sorrel doesn't keep very long, so may be hard to ship, difficult to find, and expensive. It has high levels of Vitamins A and C, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, as well as natural laxative properties.

The More You Know: Sorrel can be hard to grow because "pests" like moths love to munch it, as do deer and rabbits, who are too adorable to be called pests.
