How long have people been doing the Electric Slide?

: electric slide

Why: People were doing it to some weird country song at Joe's on Friday.

Answer: The dance (originally called "The Electric") was created in 1976 by American dancer Ric Silver for the reopening of Vamps Disco in New York. It was choreographed to the international hit song "Electric Boogie" by Marcia Griffiths; the song was written for Griffiths by Bunny Wailer, who did not copyright the song until 1982. The song was originally released in 1976 and re-released in 1989, when it became a dancefloor sensation.

The More You Know: In 2007, Silver filed DMCA-based takedown notices to YouTube users who posted videos of people performing the dance incorrectly. It is supposed to have 22 steps.
