Are nuts particularly hard to digest?

Search: nuts gassy

Why: Whenever Susanne eats nuts, she gets all gassy and bloated.

Answer: Not nuts themselves, generally, but combining them with other foods, notably fruits. Nuts are difficult for the body to break down, and are typically in the system 4-14 hours after they're eaten. Their presence in the digestive tract holds up the digestion of foods eaten after or with them, especially fruits since fruits either digest or ferment very quickly. If digestion is held up, bacteria show up to decompose (eat) the food, and it is the waste products of their metabolism that we experience as "gas."
