Why: On reddit, My favorite snack:
What in the Sam Hill.
Answer: It's called Romanesco broccoli (or chou Romanesco, "Romanesco cabbage"). It's been around the Europes for a long time and seems to have developed naturally (not as a hybrid).

The More You Know: In related news: yesterday I was eating rapini from salad bar at Whole Foods, and something about it was stinging my nose. As I ate more / continued to eat it because I am an idiot, I realized that the unpleasant sensation I was feeling in my face was the same that I get when I accidentally (or on purpose, because I am a moron) eat hot mustard at, like, Japanese places. It really stings the sinuses. Since rapini is so obviously some type of spinach/broccoli plant,
I figured it must be something in the preparation (which was listed as "steamed with garlic").
LONG STORY SHORT, I Googled "rapini mustard" to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out rapini is a type of mustard, typically described as bitter and pungent. I am a fool, a FOOL! I will probably get it again sometime.
