Search: mardi gras colors
Why: Purple and teal look nice with bronze light fixtures. :-/
Answer: Rex (the "King" Krewe of the Carnival) selected the official colors in 1872. They are said to have been chosen by Russian Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch Romanoff during a visit to New Orleans. The 1892 Rex Parade theme "Symbolism of Colors" gave meaning to each:
- Purple = justice
- Green = faith
- Gold = power
The More You Know: These colors influenced the choice of school colors for archrivals Louisiana State University and Tulane: When LSU was deciding on its colors, the shops in New Orleans had stocked up on purple, green, and gold material for the Mardi Gras season. LSU decided upon purple and gold, and bought much of it. Tulane bought much of the only remaining color, green! They are now known as the Green Wave.
