The More You Know: Like their 2004 album American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown is a rock opera. It is divided into 3 acts: "Heroes and Cons," "Charlatans and Saints," and "Horseshoes and Handgrenades." Also, I just remembered they played this song on SNL like 3 weeks ago.

This has to be a remake of a song by David Bowie called all the young dudes. It sounds just like it.
I don't know if I'd call it a remake... Green Day is notorious for plagiarizing.

It's not plagiarism. Yes, they utilize the same 4 notes for a key part of the melody - but there are only so many intervals that sound good.

Ever heard of the 21 gun salute? When someone from the military dies they honor them with a 21 gun salute. They do it for presidents and other important people.
1776 the year our nation was born..now add all those numbers..that gives u 21. Thats where the 21gun salute comes from..what they r referring to in the song.
